On May 8, Ukraine, together with the majority of nations across the globe, observes the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, honoring the memory of all those whose lives were lost during the Second World War (1939–1945). It was on this date that the Act of Germany’s Unconditional Surrender officially came into effect.
Approximately seven million Ukrainians fought in the Red Army, while over 100,000 served in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Ukrainians also took part in the armed forces of many Allied countries. The Ukrainian SSR was recognized as a founding member of the United Nations, acknowledging the immense contribution of Ukrainians to the victory over fascism.
However, Ukrainians were not only victims – they were a nation of victors, who, at the cost of enormous sacrifice, proved their commitment to freedom.
The Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation serves as a solemn reminder of the horrors that must never be repeated in a civilized world. Unfortunately, history has repeated itself. Today, Ukrainians – the very people who played a crucial role in defeating fascism 80 years ago – are once again called upon to defend their homeland against evil. We are fighting for the same universal values that the world upheld in the 1940s: freedom, democracy, and the right to self-determination.
For this reason, we understand – perhaps more deeply than anyone — the true cost of peace. We honor the memory of our heroes, who, in different eras, have given their lives for the freedom and dignity of the Ukrainian people.
The State University of Communication and Informational Technologies encourages the academic community to participate in memorial events, to engage with and preserve the historical truth of our nation, and to stand against hostile propaganda.
We also remind you that educational materials recommended for use in the learning process are available on the dedicated platform of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance focused on World War II: ww2.uinp.gov.ua.
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
