“What is a hackathon? Why does it evocate such enthusiasm?” – this question is increasingly being asked by the first-year students.
On December 4, 2024, the senior teacher of the Department of English at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Telecommunications, Anzhelika Nikolaieva, organized and held a scientific consultation to explain the meaning and importance of the hackathon for modern education.
Second-year students who participated in various hackathons were invited to the event. Oleksandr Mykhailov, a second-year student of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Information Technologies, group ISD-22, willingly shared his impressions, knowledge and experience. He told about the IT hackathon that was held at our university and was divided into three major categories: Software development, Game development, and Embedded development. It is not surprising that many teams with different projects were presented. All participants noted the acquisition of new teamwork skills. In addition, bonuses at such events can be job offers from sponsoring companies, which is extremely important.
Therefore, a hackathon is a marathon where programmers, designers and other specialists gather together to create a working product or solve a specific problem within a limited time (usually 24-48 hours). This is a great opportunity for those who want to try their hand at development, improve their skills, make new interesting acquaintances, and perhaps create a product that will then grow to the scale of a real startup.
How to get to the hackathon and what you need to know?
Hackathons allow you not only to develop technical skills, but also to expand your horizons. Participating in them helps you feel like a part of the IT community, overcome your fear of technology, and start a career in a field that always requires new ideas and a fresh perspective.
